Anti-Lock Brakes
Learn everything you wanted to know and more about ABS or the Anti lock braking system. Remember, the more you know the better you can make an informed decision and avoid costly repairs.
DESCRIPTION
The Anti-Lock Brake System allows the driver to stop in the shortest distance while maintaining steering control. During normal anti-lock operation a pulsation in brake pedal and a clicking sound will be sensed. System consists of a master cylinder/booster assembly, Electronic Control Unit Hydraulic Control Unit electric pump/motor, 4 wheel sensors, and warning lights.
OPERATION
The Electronic Control Unit receives and processes a wheel speed signal from each wheel sensor. When wheel lock-up is about to occur, the Electronic Control Unit activates solenoid valves to modulate hydraulic pressure to each wheel. A pump/motor assembly provides hydraulic pressure to the system. The traction control system controls wheel spin by modulating the engine torque by communicating to the PCM and by applying and releasing the appropriate brake to restore traction when one or both drive wheels lose traction and begin to spin during acceleration.
